Overview
Placeholder overview text. Angkor Wat is the largest religious monument in the world, originally built in the early 12th century as a Hindu temple dedicated to Vishnu before gradually transforming into a Buddhist site. Its five iconic towers, vast moat, and intricately carved bas-reliefs make it the centerpiece of the Angkor Archaeological Park and Cambodia's most visited landmark.
Most visitors arrive before dawn to watch the sunrise over the temple's towers reflected in the lotus ponds, then spend two to three hours exploring the inner galleries and climbing to the upper terrace. Plan for heat, crowds near sunrise, and modest dress (shoulders and knees covered) to enter the upper level.
Sunrise, Sunset & Equinox Timing
The Angkor Wat Equinox is a twice-yearly astronomical event where the rising sun aligns perfectly with the tip of the central tower (Prasat) of Angkor Wat. It is a popular time for photographers. Sunrise times shift throughout the year, so check ahead if timing your visit around a specific alignment.
| Period | Approx. Sunrise | Approx. Sunset | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spring Equinox (Mar 21) | ~5:55 AM | ~6:05 PM | Sun rises directly behind central tower |
| Dry Season (Nov–Feb) | ~6:10 AM | ~5:45 PM | Clearest skies, busiest crowds |
| Wet Season (Jun–Oct) | ~5:45 AM | ~6:15 PM | Fewer crowds, chance of clouds |
| Autumn Equinox (Sep 22) | ~5:50 AM | ~5:55 PM | Second annual tower alignment |
